- Abstract
The paper presents a classification of pictorial hand gestures into different semantic categories, as well as a tailored transcription system aiming to facilitate their analysis. We compare around forty representations of Jesus among the Doctors in the Temple, depicted between 1480 and 1660, in order to reveal which are the most common gestures in this topic and how they combine to form chirographic accords. Antiveduto della Grammatica plays a central role in our analysis since his interpretation of this biblical episode is highly innovative.
